Mina leaves the scarf because the gallery is warm and she still has twelve labels to straighten.
Blue paint marks one end. The other has a small repaired tear where it caught on a studio nail. She drops it on the spare chair beside Lidia and says, “Guard that for me?”
Tomorrow is Mina's first public exhibition. She has spent three years making these paintings and three weeks pretending the opening does not frighten her.
Mina does not believe as Lidia does. When Lidia asks whether she may pray, Mina smiles with tired kindness. “If it helps you not fuss over me all evening.”
The answer lands awkwardly. Permission, skepticism, affection, and a boundary are all present.
This is a purpose-written parable. Lidia places one hand on the empty chair after Mina leaves. She wants to ask God for a full room, generous reviews, sales, confidence, and a sudden change in Mina's beliefs.
Then she sees how easily love can become a script for another person's night.
She begins again, with an open hand.

Intercession is not authorship
Prayer for another person can become crowded with stage directions. Make her say this. Make them respond that way. Let the right buyer enter at this hour. Give her an experience she cannot explain.
The requests may sound loving because the desired outcome is good. The hidden posture is still control.
Scripture invites prayer for people. It does not hand you ownership of them.
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.1 Timothy 2:1, ESV
The written Word opens a wide door for intercession. The Holy Spirit leads prayer without making another person's will your assignment.
You are free to pray generously without becoming the author of someone else's response. Scripture gives you intercession, and the Holy Spirit keeps your hand open.
Lidia can bless Mina without directing her lines.
Skepticism is not the obstacle you must remove
Mina's kindness is not secret agreement. Her skepticism is not a spiritual defect Lidia must overcome before God can act. It belongs to Mina's actual position, and respecting it is part of loving her truthfully.
You do not need to turn every polite permission into a hidden opening. “You may pray” means you may pray. It does not mean you may press, interpret, report progress, or ask later whether the prayer worked.
God knows Mina fully. Lidia does not.
You are released from monitoring another person's belief. The written Word teaches love without manipulation, and the Holy Spirit works beyond your sight and outside your management.
This does not cool prayer. It cleans it.
Blessing can be specific without becoming controlling
Lidia can ask for strength, wise help, safety, honest encouragement, and grace within the evening. She can thank God for Mina's patient work and distinctive sight.
She can also admit what she wants. “God, I want her to know You.” Honesty is better than disguising desire as detachment.
Then comes the release: “Her will is not mine. Her story is not mine. The audience and the outcome are Yours.”
That release does not make prayer weak. It returns authority to its proper place.
You have authority over anxious fear, not over another person's will. The written Word anchors your love, and the Holy Spirit teaches intercession that neither grasps nor withdraws.
After praying, notice what remains yours to do. Arrive when you said you would. Help only in the ways Mina requested. Ask before moving a painting. Leave the supply-room door unblocked. These small acts may serve her more faithfully than another speech.
Also notice what is not yours. You do not count compliments, decode her mood, or turn a difficult moment into proof that she needs your beliefs. You do not report her private fear to a prayer group without consent. Intercession never cancels confidentiality.
You can carry prayer privately and friendship visibly. Scripture shapes your conduct, and the Holy Spirit keeps your care practical, consented to, and free of hidden claims.
This kind of restraint is not distance. It is tenderness strong enough to let Mina remain fully herself while love stays close.
The breakthrough is not a sold painting or a changed confession. It is the leash disappearing from the prayer.
Mina may enjoy the evening or find it exhausting. The room may be full or thin. Her beliefs may remain exactly where they were. None of those outcomes measures Lidia's faith.
Lidia can pray and then attend as a friend. She can celebrate the work without mining the night for spiritual evidence. She can hear a boundary without feeling rejected.
The written Word permits intercession. The Holy Spirit keeps it free of possession.
You are able to bless without scripting, love without monitoring, and hope without grasping. Scripture keeps your prayer clean, and the Holy Spirit guards the freedom of the person you name.
Declare this over yourself
Your place in Christ is already given, so you address anxious fear without claiming another person's will. The outcome is His, and this declaration promises neither belief, reception, nor success.
- Anxious need to manage her night, you do not get to dress control in the language of prayer. Exhibition, audience, and response, you are circumstances and not mine to command. The written Word keeps authority here, and the Holy Spirit carries this truth without pressure.
- Fear that her skepticism blocks God or that I must force an opening, leave in the name of Jesus. I refuse to turn friendship into surveillance.
- God, Your written Word welcomes intercession, and Your Holy Spirit teaches love with an open hand. I bless Mina freely and leave her will, her work, and every outcome with You.
