Eleven Minutes and the Radiator Ticking

This is a purpose-written parable.

The bathroom is the only room in the house with a lock, which is the entire reason she prays in it.

Twenty to six. The radiator has just come on and it is ticking its way up to warm. She sits on the closed lid with a towel over her knees because the plastic is cold, and she takes the small paperback Bible off the windowsill, the one that has gone wavy at the corners from years of steam. Four people are asleep down the landing. This is the eleven minutes.

She knows it is eleven minutes because she sets it. Not for God. For herself, because without a timer she drifts, and then a door goes and the day starts and it never happens at all.

So she prays. She says the names of her children, one at a time, the way you would put things down on a table. She says the thing about her mother. She reads four verses, then reads them again because the first pass did not go in. Then the timer makes its small chime, and she does the thing she has done every morning for two years and has never once said out loud to another human being.

She checks.

She checks the way a person checks a thermometer. She sits very still and reads herself, looking for the flutter, the warmth under the breastbone, the lift behind the eyes. She is looking for what happened one night eleven years ago in a hall full of people during the third song, when she cried so hard that a woman she had never met put a hand flat on her back.

There is a radiator ticking. There is a towel over her knees and a slightly wavy page under her thumb. There is nothing else at all.

So she folds it up, puts the Bible back on the sill, goes down and fills the kettle, and carries a small quiet verdict into the whole day: that did not work either.

And you know exactly how she reads it, because you read yours the same way. You have been treating your own chest as the instrument, and getting a flat line off it for a long time now. Somewhere in the last year you stopped saying anything about it, because saying it out loud would make it a real problem, and you had already decided what the reading meant.

What He was not in

Let me say the part that usually gets skipped over.

It is not nothing to pray for two years and feel nothing. It is a specific and lonely kind of tired, and it is heavier than people think, because there is nothing to point at. You are not being dramatic. There is a real weight in going to the same room at the same hour and coming out the same, and getting up and doing it again the next morning anyway. Some mornings the getting up is the whole prayer, and it is a better one than you know. The Psalms give that tired voice a place to stand, and the Holy Spirit meets you there without asking you to brighten it.

And you are not wrong to want to feel Him. Do not let anyone talk you out of the wanting: the Psalms are full of people who want it loudly, and God kept every one of those songs in the book. Feeling is not the enemy here, and I am not going to ask you to put it away. Scripture keeps the wanting honest, and the Holy Spirit keeps it from becoming a verdict against you.

I am only going to ask you to stop weighing yourself with it.

Because there was a man who had watched fire fall in front of an entire nation, the most spectacular answer of his life, and forty days later he was in a cave in the dark asking to die. God did not lecture him. He fed him, let him sleep, and brought him out to stand on the mountain.

And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.1 Kings 19:11-12

Read what that wind was. It was enormous. It broke rocks apart. If you had been standing on that mountain, every nerve you own would have reported back at once, and you would have written the date in the front of your Bible.

And the LORD was not in it.

Then the earthquake, then the fire, and the same short sentence twice more. Three of the most overwhelming things a body can stand inside of, and the text goes out of its way, three separate times, to say He was not in them. Not because they were bad, but because they were not the point, and Elijah needed to know the difference before going back down.

Then, after all of it, in the quiet: the voice.

You are not abandoned in the room where only the radiator answers. The written account refuses to crown wind, earthquake, or fire as proof, and the Holy Spirit remains with you when His work arrives without spectacle.

Now hold your thermometer against that. If the presence of God could be read off what a body reports, the wind would have won easily. It did not. The one thing on that mountain that actually carried Him registered as very nearly nothing.

So here is the sentence I want to leave in that bathroom with you. Your feelings are weather. His word is the climate. Weather is real, it is honestly reported, it is never denied and never performed, and it has never once been in charge of the season it is passing through. You have been standing at the window reading the rain and concluding that you live somewhere else.

You are held by what God has written even when your interior weather stays flat. The written Word gives your faith its ground, and the Holy Spirit remains your Helper without requiring sensation.

And Scripture will not let faith be a feeling, because it defines faith as the opposite of a reading: the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Not the evidence of things felt. Faith is itself the evidence, the thing you are holding when there is nothing to hold, which means a morning with nothing in it is not the failure of your faith. It is the exact condition faith was described for.

You possess the substance Scripture names before your chest reports anything back. The written Word places evidence beneath your hand, and the Holy Spirit keeps that quiet trust alive without requiring a temperature.
